In 1818, William Cooper (1786-1867), a native of Scotland, moved his family from London to Prince Edward Island, where he acquired land in Township number 56 on the east end of the island. The farm was called "Sailor's Hope." Cooper worked as a shipbuilder, sea captain, farmer, land agent, and politician. In 1849, Cooper built a ship called the Packet to move his family from Prince Edward Island to San Francisco in the hope of finding more opportunity. The extended family on the ship consisted of William Cooper, Sr. and wife Sarah Glover (d. 1850) and their children, their children's spouses, and grandchildren. The children were John Woodcock Cooper (1817-1906), William Cooper, Jr. (1819-1853), Malvina Cooper (1825-1850), Adolphus Cooper (1827-1852), Oscar Cooper (1829-1850), George Dalyrimple Cooper (1830-1861), David Cooper (1835-1852), Rowena Cooper (1835-1926), and Caroline V. Cooper (1838-1918). and John W.'s wife Margaret Davidson, The family travelled around Cape Horn and landed in San Francisco Bay in July 1850. Shortly thereafter, Wiliam Cooper Sr.'s wife, Sarah Glover, died of cholera. John Woodcock Cooper (son of William Cooper) also lost his wife, Margaret Davidson, and their son shortly after arrival in San Francisco. In the wake of these tragedies, William Cooper, Sr. returned to Prince Edward Island, where he served in the legislature and remained until his death in 1867. The children left in California mostly moved to Humboldt County in 1851, where they secured claims on the Eel River and Yager Creek. Eventually, John Woodcock Cooper settled in Arcata with his family.
